This is my sister, Alyssa. In the photo above its her, her best friend, and I on the left. On the right is what my sister used to look like. On May 12th, 2011 my sister was hit by a van while crossing a main road. She was mercy flighted to Erie County Medical Center, where they thought she was going to pass. If my sister would have taken an ambulance, she would have died on the way there. She had her spleen removed and skull pieces taken out because her brain was so swollen. That day, I was told she had a 1% chance that she wasn’t going to make it through the night. She did. She’s fought off so many rare infections, gone through so many surgeries, has been opened up, broken down, and sewed back together. A year and two months later, my sister is in fact alive. She’s in a coma, but alive. She had spent 10 months in the hospital. She is breathing on her own, and she even opens her eyes. My sister cannot talk. My sister cannot move on her own. My sister cannot chose anything that occurs in her life. I’m not writing this for your sympathy. I don’t want you to feel bad or say you’re sorry. I’m writing this because I’ve been having a tough week. But then when I look at my sister and see what she has gone through, I suck it up. My problems don’t compare to any of hers. She could die at any waking moment, and I’m caught up about a guy. I’m writing this because I want everyone to know, things could be worse. So don’t dwell over small things in life. Appreciate what you have, while you have it. I miss my sister so unbelievably much and there’s nothing I wouldn’t do to spend time with her like we used to. Please, don’t take your life for granted.
